Injuries Sustained by Dog Bite Victims

When a dog attacks, it can inflict tremendous damage on its target. People who are attacked by a dog may suffer serious or even fatal injuries. Injuries commonly associated with dog bite attacks include lacerations, nerve damage, scars and disfigurement. Dog bite victims may suffer emotional injuries as well, including anxiety.

While certain dog breeds are responsible for a large number of dog bite attacks, any dog that has not been properly trained, socialized and restrained may potentially attack an innocent victim. Dog owners have a responsibility to properly monitor their dog, properly restrain their dog, and act prudently for the protection of the public. Tennessee law provides strong protections for dog bite victims:

The owner of a dog or one who has control of a dog has a duty to keep that dog from running at large. A person who breaches that duty is subject to civil liability for any damages suffered by a person who is injured by the dog ... If the dog is off the owner's property, the owner may be held liable regardless of whether the dog has shown any dangerous propensities or whether the dog's owner knew or should have known of the dog's dangerous propensities. Injuries caused by a dog on the owner's property may also create liability if the owner knew or should have known that the dog had dangerous propensities. [T.C.A. 44-8-408]
